Where are there standards written about what to do in the wake of such barbaric assaults from terrorists? Without dredging up every little fact, it can be generally said that there is a measure of how the current leadership reacted, and it's a credit compared against any previous administration. Mistakes - major mistakes - were made, and more innocent blood was shed. Were we so blind to have not anticipated sacrifices? Was it wrong to invade Iraq? Given the circumstances, and the looming threat that terrorist cells would have had much easier access to some contraband that would likely have done a bit more damage than a few well-flown planes had we not stepped in at all it may have well been worth it. Either way, it's pretty clear that the war has yet to be paid for in full. What would you have had to say about some civil rights encroachment had nuclear or biological bombs been detonated on us 6 or 12 months later? Would you prefer marshall law, millions upon millions of innocent casualties, and land that would be forever inhabitable, all because the higher ups said, "well, we're not sure if they have WMD's, maybe we better wait." instead of acting when they did? Honestly, I don't know how different things would be. I do believe our government bought us some crucial time to not only prepare for future attacks, but to re-examine the roll of the UN. In the aftermath, things look bleak, but think how much worse this could have turned out. I feel for the Iraqi civilians, I really do. I also feel that we did them a favor. Sovereignty is one thing, but under leadership like Saddam's, Bush doesn't look so bad, does he? The mess is going to take a long time to clean up, and the room will always stink of it. It's a smell that will remind us more of tyranny, however, than the misguided actions of Democracy. I'm fearful of how all of this will be remembered when my grandchildren are taught history.
DA, you and I are cool, and I don't want to have a firey go over politics with you. I stand by my statements, but I also apologize for coming at the topic the way I did at first. I'm of the opinion that our current government is doing a better job than what we've been lead to believe, and the irritant to me is the way the media keeps cramming anti-Bush sentiment down our throats. It sickens me to think that a large percentage of voters will be taken by that, instead of making up their own minds. That's all I have to say.
Edit: I should also note that "Grow up?" was in response to the article, and not to anyone else's opinion.
